You have a cupboard, drawers, racks full of clothes and shoes but… you have nothing to wear! You have beautiful clothes you spent good money on, but don’t touch and won’t giveaway!
I go through phases of clothes. I mix the new with the old and will wear the same sets of clothes til i’m bored with them… then they’ll hide perfectly fine at the bottom of a pile of shirts only to be discovered months later!
A few weeks ago I went to the Skip Fashion Exchange. It is the most brilliantly put together event and has a genius solution to the above woes.
You bring your good quality clothes that you paid good money for (they have really strict rules about quality etc) and you get to exchange them with a whole room full of women. The nice thing about the rules is that you know you’re going to find something of good quality in return.
How it works:
You arrive with your bag of items (get handed a glass of champagne) and go to the assessment station where lovely ladies will assess the value of your clothes by colour code (eg. Maybe a fancy Nine West bag would be worth more than a Woolworths Skirt). You then get colour tokens you’ll use as currency for shopping later in the evening.
All of the clothes, shoes, bags are placed on shelves and racks just like in a normal shop while everyone enjoys a delicious 3 course meal and some entertainment!
After dinner they announce that the “shop” is open! It’s a bit of a mad rush, girls grabbing things off racks but it’s a lot of fun!
I came with a few items I loved but never wore but I left with a few amazing items i’m wearing all the time now (some were brand new, still had the price tag on!).
They will be running the these events again next year both in Cape Town and Joburg (I’ll be sure to let you know when), and I definitely recommend it. It was such a fun evening out and brilliant concept.
