Johannesburg - Charlie Hindhaugh

If you’re in Johannesburg over the next few days you have no excuse but to go to town! Starting tomorrow and running until Sunday is the Joburg City Festival.

It’s a celebration of the regenerated Joburg City (town). Anchored by nine main performance venues and dozens of fringe venues, the festival takes place across 11 inner-city districts from 2 – 5 October 2014. The entire festival is based on the use of public transport: hop on a Rea Vaya bus or a festival shuttle at a dedicated parking area and go to town!

There are new food markets opening (The sheds!), there will be free fashion shows at the fashion district (which i’m ashamed to say I haven’t spent much time in), comedy nights, concerts, historical tours and a lot of cool specials (Go over to the website to see the full festival programme).

Most of the events are free, but there are some really cool shows and concerts you might want to snag some tickets to! For eg. Vodacom in the City on Friday night (MGMT & Crystal Fighters!) and a special unplugged Johnny Clegg concert at the Wits Great Hall on Saturday night.

I’m definitely going to VITC on Friday night and going to make a plan to pop into The Sheds! I hear Pauls Homemade Ice cream will be there and that’s reason enough!

So don’t make excuses, buy a bus ticket and try go to as much as possible. This is the perfect opportunity to meet the city you live in!
